Wilfred Burkle
June 7, 1929 ~ March 8, 2018 (age 88) 88 Years Old
Wilfred Burkle, of Longmeadow, MA, passed away peacefully at his home on March 8, 2018 in the presence of his loving family. Wilfred was born in Flushing, NY on June 7, 1929. He graduated from Mepham Central High School, North Bellmore, NY, then received a Bachelor’s degree from the College of Fine Arts, Syracuse University, and Master of Music in Music Education from Boston University. Wilfred married Carol E. Boyd, his wife of 55 years, on September 8, 1962. Wilfred worked as an educator for Longmeadow Public Schools for 31 years, establishing a thriving Fine Arts program in Longmeadow High School during his tenure. He was awarded the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) Lowell Mason Award in 1980, and the MMEA Distinguished Service Award in Music Education in 1981. He also played for many years as principal oboe in the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, where he met his wife. Wilfred is survived by his wife, Carol; his son, Alan (Debbie) and grandchildren, Meredith and Jonathan; his son, Stephan; his niece Laurie (Larry) and grandniece Meghan. Wilfred is also preceded in death by his parents and sister, Phyllis. Calling hours will be held from 1-5PM on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at their home, 29 Arcadia St, Longmeadow, MA. A private burial will be held at a later date at Breslau Cemetery in Lindenhurst, NY, a town that his grandfather helped found.
