Harold A Smith

October 26, 1927 ~ February 15, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old
Springfield - Harold A. Smith, 89, devoted husband for 65 years to Beverly (Lauer) Smith, passed away on February 15, 2017.
Born in his grandmother’s home on Crown Street on October 26, 1927, “Happy Harry” was the son of the late Cleon H. Smith and Hattie (Darrah) Smith. He was the brother of the late Paul Smith.  Harold was educated in the Springfield school system and graduated from the following: American Institute of Banking, Brown University Graduate School of Banking, University of Massachusetts Leadership School for Senior Executives, and Michigan State Appraisal School for Income Producing Properties.
Harold served his country in the US Navy as a signalman for three years, receiving an honorable discharge on February 4, 1948.  He retired as Vice President and Mortgage Office after 42 years from the Springfield Institution for Savings, a career that he started as an office boy and messenger. He was a guest lecturer at Springfield Technical Community College in seminars for prospective home buyers. He was a past member of the Springfield Board of Realtors, Greater Springfield Home Builders Association and a Life Member of the Elks Lodge #61. He was a charter member of the Elks Golf League and honored as Sportsman of the Year in 1986. For 15 years, Harold was Treasurer of Junior Achievement.
The most important part of his life was family. He was an important role model for his children and grandchildren. From rocking them to sleep as babies, to encouraging their interests, school work, athletic endeavors (attending every school night function) to their school choices as they got older, he remained a positive constant in their lives.  Harold had a wonderful life enjoying trips to Disneyland, Orlando, ocean cruises, traveling cross country (visiting major National Parks and vistas), and Hampton Beach (for over 70 years) . And of course, he was a lifelong avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins, and the New York Giants (but would still root for the Patriots when not playing the Giants). He leaves his son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey Smith and Pamela Milcos-Smith of Pennsylvania; a daughter and son-in-law Laurie and Paul Lemoine of East Longmeadow; 4 grandchildren, Paul Edward Lemoine III, Johnathan Lemoine, Christopher Smith, and Marjanna Smith.

His family will receive friends for visiting hours from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. with a memorial celebration of his life at 11:30 a.m on Monday, February 20th, 2017 in the Forastiere Smith Family Funeral & Cremation, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Harold’s memory to The Dakin Human Society at www.dakinhumane.org or to Dakin Humane Society, PO Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101.
